ART DIRECTOR Lee & Low Books Inc., New York, NY Fall 91–present
As consulting art director/designer since the company's inception, I've shaped the look of this award-winning multicultural children's book publisher, guiding many first time picture book artists into successful careers.
ART DIRECTOR Four Winds Press, New York, NY 2/91–10/94
I reviewed, selected, directed illustrators, mapmakers, and calligraphers; supervised assistants and freelancers; designed the complete list including picture books, chapter books, non-fiction photographic books, and novels. I worked closely with editorial, marketing, and production. I supervised full color, halftone, and duotone press runs.
ART DIRECTOR Macmillan/Four Winds Press, New York, NY 9/90–2/91 (Interim)
I art directed and designed all type of children's books, managed the design staff, freelancers, and illustrators, and worked closely with a large editorial staff for two imprints, maintaining schedules and budgets and bringing in new talents during company restructuring.
ART DIRECTOR Bradbury Press, New York, NY 4/90–7/90 (Interim)
I covered for the art director on maternity leave, managed the design staff and freelancers,
keeping projects on schedule.
SENIOR DESIGNER G.P. Putnam's Sons/Philomel Books, New York, NY 4/88–3/90
I worked closely with many editors from two imprints designing a large list of non-fiction photographic books, novels, picture books and marketing materials for children. I reviewed portfolios, supervised freelancers, and directed domestic press checks.
DESIGN ASSOCIATE Aperture, New York, NY 4/87–3/88
As first staff designer for this fine art publisher, I designed award-winning books and issues of their quarterly magazine, brochures, and promotional materials, as well as gallery exhibitions.
ART ASSISTANT Dutton Children's Books, New York, NY 10/86–4/87
Assisting the art director I was introduced to all aspects of children's book publishing. I prepared traditional mechanicals, worked with typesetters and compositors, checked blues and proofs, designed novels and picture books, reviewed portfolios, organized art files and handled all correspondence.
